Eligibility & Selection Process

NJHS is an honor that must be earned and maintained each year.

SELECTION PROCESS FOR NJHS

Section I

The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the assistant director. The chapter advisor shall be the sixth, non-voting member of the Faculty Council. Selection to the National Honor Society/National Junior Honor Society is a privilege, not a right.

Section II

Prior to selection, the following shall occur:

  • Students’ academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility. Students in grades 6–8 are eligible for membership. Sixth-grade students must be in their second semester to be considered for membership. Transferred students in grades 7–8 must be enrolled for at least one semester at the school before being considered. All candidates must have a minimum 3.5 GPA (unweighted) on a 4.0 scale or higher to be eligible for consideration.
  • Students who meet academic requirements (“candidates”) shall be notified and invited to complete and submit the Candidate Information Sheet for further consideration for selection. This form must be completed and submitted to the advisor by the deadline listed on the invitation. Any requests for exceptions to meeting the deadline should be presented to the NHS/NJHS advisor.
  • The faculty council shall be requested to evaluate the candidates who are determined to be scholastically eligible, using the official input form provided by the chapter adviser.
  • The Faculty Council shall review the Candidate Form, faculty input and other relevant information to determine which students fully meet selection criteria for membership.

Section III

Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony held during the Spring.

Section IV

Once selected and inducted, all members are expected to maintain the standards by which they were selected and maintain all obligations of membership.

Section V

An active member of the National Junior Honor Society who transfers from this school will be given, upon request, a letter indicating the status of his or her membership and signed by the principal or chapter adviser.

Section VI

An active member of the National Junior Honor Society who transfers to this school during the school year will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The Faculty Council shall grant to the transferring member one quarter to attain the membership requirements and, thereafter, this member must maintain those requirements for this chapter in order to retain his or her membership.
