A building once used for educating young minds will soon be up for grabs.

The Anton School building is one of the items slated for auction next week by the Hopkins County School District.

Gibson Realty and Auction will seek bids for the 27,875- square-foot building at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at 5770 Anton Road.

Steve Gilliam, assistant superintendent of facilities, said the Anton School building has been vacant for the past 18 months.

“We don’t use it anymore,” Gilliam said “It will be interesting to see how much money it does bring.”

The school, which sits on 7-acres of land, was originally built as a high school in 1949.

It then served as a grade school until 1994, when Jesse Stuart Elementary opened.

“It was used for storage for 5-6 years and around 2000 it was used as alternate school for treatment,” said Gilliam.

Other school system property will be auctioned later that same afternoon at 110 Sugg St. in Madisonville. A few of the surplus items include:

• School buses

• School furniture

• Kitchen/cafeteria equipment.

The money earned from the auction will be used for the Hopkins County School District’s general fund.
